Sunbathing lawn or sports seats - or even both? Mobility requirements change with each generation, but what does that mean for the interior of the vehicle?

The future of automotive interiors is shaped by four key developments: Autonomous driving, connectivity, electrification and shared mobility.

Autonomous driving

Autonomous driving allows drivers to use their time differently while driving instead of focusing on driving the car. This results in a new approach to interior design, which focuses on ergonomics and comfort of the driver and his passengers. Rear seats, for example, are being converted into relaxation seats and more entertainment options are being installed.

Connectivity

Connectivity allows vehicle occupants to be connected anytime, anywhere. This results in a variety of new interior options, such as the integration of smartphones and other mobile devices, the ability to stream music and movies, and the use of voice control and other intelligent functions.

Electrification of the powertrain has an impact on the interior as the space required for the engine and tank is reduced. This makes it possible to make the interior more spacious and comfortable. The design of the dashboard and the placement of displays and control elements can also be changed.

Shared Mobility

Shared mobility means that more and more people share cars instead of owning them. This results in higher demand for vehicles that are easy to clean and disinfect to ensure hygiene. The condition of the interior will also play a bigger role due to more frequent use.

All in all, it is becoming apparent that automotive interiors will increasingly focus on driver and passenger comfort, technological equipment and adapting to the requirements of shared mobility.
